Property-related crimes in Shelby County seem to be down this year, according to a report recently issued by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department. The same goes in the city, as Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin has said that so far this year, overall crime in the city is down 7 percent.
Crime still happens, though, as the 40 property-related crimes reported in the sheriff’s report in April shows.
For those people who lost something valuable to them, whether it was jewelry, artwork or electronics, a new company is offering a product that will help trace stolen property back to its owners if it’s recovered by law enforcement.
MicroDot America recently was started by Donnie Craig, the company’s president and CEO, who came out of retirement for the second time to open the new business. Craig has worked in the computer division of Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division and also opened his own computer service business.
MicroDot America is an agent of DataDot, a small identifier used to protect property.
DataDots, which are smaller than a grain of sand, hold identifying information that links the merchandise to its original owner.
“I was actually looking for a different product,” Craig said. “And during my research I ran across this product … and we continued to follow it and track it and it looked really good to us.”
Etched in stone The product is applied directly to the merchandise through a liquid similar to clear nail polish, or for bigger things, through a spray. Once it dries it is “virtually naked” to the eye.
“You put it on with a swab,” Craig said. “You can buy a generic bottle, very inexpensive for your home and basically what you’re doing is buying the service. The product is just part of the application, and you buy the service and it lasts forever, basically. We put you in the database and if your product or your merchandise is ever stolen then the police can actually take a light, shine on it and see the data that’s on there; your information will be etched on there.”
The key is that law enforcement officials must be aware the information is there and be educated about how to use it.
So far, local law enforcement officials said they are unaware of the product’s existence.
Steve Shular, public information officer for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, said he spoke with officers in the property crimes division and nobody was familiar with the product.
Detective Monique Martin, public information officer with the Memphis Police Department, also said she was unfamiliar with the product.
Craig said he’s working now to make the community at large and local law enforcement agencies aware of the product.
He held a “Come and See Demonstration” earlier this week at Bartlett Nursery and said he plans to hold more demonstrations and would like to speak with officials at both law enforcement agencies to show them how the system works.
Slow migration This is the first time the MicroDot technology has been introduced to the Memphis area, but it already is in Chattanooga, Tenn., Craig said.
“It’s mostly on the West Coast and the East Coast,” he said. “But it’s slowly migrating into Tennessee now and the Mid-South.”
The one-time fee lasts a lifetime, Craig said, adding that customers’ information always will be stored in a database accessible to insurance companies and law enforcement agencies.
There are other services the company offers, though, such as warranties on large merchandise such as automobiles and motorcycles.
“They can buy a warranty, if you will,” Craig said. “So let’s say you buy a motorcycle and you decide you want to protect it with our MicroDot. The dealer will actually install that; he doesn’t even tell us where he puts it and then if the motorcycle is ever stolen, the owner could come back to that dealership and if it’s $5,000 warranty, he can apply $5,000 toward a brand new motorcycle, for instance.”
The DataDot technology is not new, Craig said, adding that it was developed by the military during the 1940s.
It was used in espionage activities for passing sensitive information, appearing as a period on documents, according to the DataDot USA Inc. Web site.
MicroDots are much smaller than the DataDots and that’s why they appear invisible to the naked eye.
