What Israel is doing is adding to the cost of Iranian occupation of Syria knowing well that Iran, in its current state of economic woe can't afford to be there.
Israel's armed forces are structured for offence rather than defence. By themselves they are too small to control large swathes of Syrian territory. To succeed they would need to do what the US did and work through a reliable indigenous force such as the Kurds but the Kurds largely live in the North of Syria and Israel is to the South of Syria.
A key problem for Israel is that Trump is forcing the Kurds (on threat of genocide) and their allies into the arms of Iran, Russia and Assad. As the wiser Ottoman sultans once knew an alliance with the Kurds implies control of the ME.
