What you see in the photos is the gravel section of the road, either side of the river. Before and after that is blacksoil. Only takes a couple of mm of rain and the blacksoil becomes impassable. There are practical (can't get machinery/vehicles/plant in and out when it rains) and OHS (can easily become inaccessible and dangerous to land a helicopter) reasons why work stops up here. At the moment we're getting 20-40mm downpours every couple of days. (Be nice if we got a lot more. Four months of 40 degrees is enough to test anyone's sanity).
