Depending on your broker, you have to HOLD the shares before the record date which is the day after the ex div date. for example our broker sux and it took five days for our shares to settle and therefore we did not HOLD those shares until six days after our transaction date. therefore we missed out on the March Dividend even though we had bought the shares a day before the record date. Make sure you know how long it takes for shares to actually be in your name (which as far as I know is settlement or a day after settlement for the information to reach BHP computer shares system) in short settlement date is not irrelevant it is super important and it can be a costly mistake to think otherwise. again I am no professional, but I have unfortunately had to learn the hard way and don't wish for this to happen to anyone else. DYOR cheers.
