@Macca, the reports of meetings and conferences demonstrate that the interest level is high.  But I have not seen any limitation on the source of supply, restricting the choice to SMN.  Where is the evidence that, as you say, there is:

"nothing close to what SMN has"

I hope you are right, but where is your confirmation?  Remote sensing devices, of all shapes and sizes, are not exactly new! 

In addition, if the field is as profitable, and as long-lasting an investment, as we all hope, there will be a huge incentive for electronics companies the world over to develop something similar.  We can get IP protection for a specific technique for sensing, but (as I understand patent law) not for the basic idea of doing it.  

The glacial pace at which things have been happening to date doesn't seem to allow for much in the way of "first-mover advantage".

If my reading of the position is wrong, please feel free to correct me, preferably with evidence.  I still hold, but not too sure why.
