The fact that they only purchased 100,000 shares suggests the buyback was purely "emotional support" to long-suffering shareholders; there was no real intention to support the SP in a financial sense. To me, it seems like a veiled attempt to ..... (redacted).

That would be great but IMHO there is no way we will be paid anywhere near NTA. Although it eludes us all, I'm sure there is a reason why our SP is well under half NTA. My guess is we'll be offered around $2, by an entity with links to Murpha, although those links will not be apparent.
deal on TO is come to near that why they canceled the buy back.
So let's look at this logically then. If the "TO" is going to be for a price greater than the current SP ($1.60) then it makes perfect financial sense for AOG to repurchase as many shares as they can, even if they have to debt fund the buy-back (that debt can be quickly repaid after the TO). As TwinWins said "
so they near double the dollar". In my mind they should be purchasing as many as they can, if they truly believe that each share is worth NTA. They'd be more than doubling their money even if debt-funded. This is another reason I feel the "TO" will be at a low price: debt funding makes sense only if the TO price is well above the buyback price.
I would be so happy to be proven wrong though.
