Shorting is meant to be for investing in the hope a share price goes down.

Where the problem and grey areas arise is when you directly are causing a share price to go down, through media, and borderline defamatory claims and the fact no need for evidence being required. You just need to manipulate sentiment and cause fear in a stock.

I won't hold my breath but I hope some positive changes happens and this can shine some light on the dodgy practices and market manipulation which occurs. No company is safe. A large campaign of shorters can literally target any stock on the ASX and then make up any claim they want without evidence or trial and sink the share price. It could cause a total loss of faith in investing completely if it becomes more common.

Do we really want a system like this , or one which enables this?
