There are a number of scholarly articles discussing vanadium extraction from Alum Shales. It appears bioleaching is the preferred method and from my limited reading, maximum extraction is achieved at lower pH values and pulp density over a short duration.
In one study (link attached), "The highest extraction was 68.86 % at pH = 1.3, leaching for one day."
