You didn't understand why China's economy exploded in the first place. It was America's global policy to open up China to the world. This policy was initiated by Nixon administration soon after the NK war was over. Its core aim was to make China a rich country and a converted democratic partner with America and the West. America and the West hoped that once China got out of poverty and became a wealthy economy nation, the responsibility would come with that success. This policy was continued by both sides of administration until Obama. Why Donald Trump took his tough stand on China? Trump found that China's wealth and growth only made China more aggressive on global stage both economically and military. Trump punished China for cyber thefts and technology thefts etc dated back many decades. Trump and his administration knew a policy initiated by Nixon's administration until Obama's administration was an absolute failure. It couldn't change the regime to a democratic and responsible nation. On the contra, China became even more aggressive and ambitious to rule the world. In the UN China veto most resolutions moved by America and the West. China is currently using its economic power and military power to achieve its ambitions. You have to follow the history and the news regularly to understand why Trump wanted a trade war. Trump wanted to send message to Xi's regime that it is game over. Trump wanted China and the world to know that America is still a world leader and will always be a world leader. Anyway if you're interested, just dyor about global politics. More complicated than you knew. Trade war which Trump started is only a show case, not even a real trade war yet. Xi portrayed himself to his people as a strongman. For now he will not back off, but the question is not if but when Xi would surrender to Trump's trade war pressure. Surrender or regime collapse or regime infighting? Eventually the regime must choose a survival option like Kim of NK. Anyway I shouldn't talk about the politics here. I only gave you a bit of knowledge.
