Texas oilmen aiming to drill in Wairarapa 9/4/08

Petroleum explorers are out to strike oil on a small block of Wairarapa farmland.
Crown Minerals has given permission to Texas-owned oil company Discovery Geo Corporation, which is based in New Plymouth, to explore 2481 square kilometres of the East Coast Basin in the next five years.
The drilling site is on a small farming block part-owned by rugby great Sir Brian Lochore.
The permit allows the company to drill and test one well. The chosen site within the permitted area is less than a hectare of hill- country grazing and forestry land 23 kilometres east of Masterton.
It is the first inland prospect in Wairarapa by the company, which in 2006 set out to establish test sites in the region.
At the time, New Zealand exploration manager Bruce Morris said it was early days, but Wairarapa could yield positive results, as there were "quite regular seeps all along the east coast of the North Island". If the data was positive, the oil company would try drilling wells to see what the structures contained, he said.
