I think it’s the only way .
I grew up in a region , married there - had always loved the country and didn’t want to leave.
Mining companies sometimes were seen through the years , drilling along the roads , near the boundaries of people’s properties . They have the prospecting rights to do so . Government granted.
I grew up feeling dread if ever thought they ever really would mine- come and “take over “ our farm . I was naive , and only young . We don’t think we ever want things to change , or fear all be ruined if mining allowed . Like miners are the trespassers.
In early adult life - I returned to nearby region to work , and got married. This region , mining had been more seriously mooted , and a company did come to stake claims . It must have taken some years , they had to determine the areas of main interest ,have meetings with local farmers and small villages in area , and the landowners.
An entire small settlement was swallowed up by the mine in the end ! Naturally this had always been feared .
I presumed nobody wanted it to go ahead , Mining in our area had never existed and was unheard of - ‘didn’t seem to belong ‘ , upset the local scheme of things , took over familiar areas , that had ‘always ‘ been farming , or as were , roads and infrastructure besides . There was a lot of protesting , and some very divided and even bitter opinions . Was hard on the older couples , who had spent their lives establishing their homes, and often their parents were there before them.
A few decades on - all communities local to the mine now - are highly supportive. Jobs are highly wanted . To get a job , working with the mine or doing work for them is desirable , wanted .
It’s like all of the angst and doubt of years ago - is forgotten completely , long distant memory . Nowadays it’s no longer in question- everyone much more willing to cooperate. Work together with the mine and other new ventures that have sprung up over years since.
The Mine provides significantly towards the regions livelihood here now .
In that time - a lot of new developments have occurred , the area could never have relied just on farming , and does not have to be so influenced by the weather and ‘bad’ or ‘good’ seasons anymore .
The mining company employed some of the best local , honest people to work for them. Still does. Including the people whose land directly effected if they wished .
Company provides daytime jobs , many mothers drive machines while their children are in school , and shift work , parttime employment for local farmers & townspeople nearby - which supplements small landholders income and allows them to live the rural life , and keeps the towns alive . This is now what everyone supports and appreciates . They have a good environmental record .
Suddenly people are more concerned about the mining - NOT stopping , or finishing up !
I never could have thought 20 years ago that I would approve and very much respect the mining company. The company has an excellent reputation .
I know this is Australia. Not the SI or Sth Pacific nation .
In the end - if a resource is important enough , and beneficial enough - for it to be opened to mining , all has got to work and evolve with the landowners there .
They most likely will come to feel lucky to have their resources - and the benefits and opportunities that can flow to their communities.
More young people can stay there , raise children and grow their own families in their home area .
Otherwise - traditionally large numbers of young people have to move away from where they’ve grown up , for higher education and to find life and work opportunities.
It’s really hard - when something big , a company or industry comes in , to your own home area .
Things have to start somewhere .
But is all very foreign for anyone involved to try gain full understanding of , lot of uncertainty beforehand whether people think they’ll be happy or not by the big change.
Axiom - and what long been envisaged - all very interesting as well as confronting for so long in the SI.
Logic tells me it also most likely will come to be very special for the locals to be a part of .
It really isn’t any different to a company earning the rights to quarry beside you or approach to quarry on your land . Takes some getting used to !
But the income is very helpful and adds a lot of value , security - for the landowner.
It’s the only way to unlock the in ground value for the local people .
