Hmmmmm I'm starting to think that a $20k, 7.5kW solar panel system with a Tesla II battery pack may be more advanced than this gigafactory (well technically we have not seen the announcement, but have seen photos of the giga-parking).
Seriously such a flawed strategy and such waste of time & money:
- lithium battery prices expected to fall by 25% CAGR until at least 2025
- graphite usage in those same batteries expected to grow by 35% CAGR until at least 2025
- almost all battery producers are indicating graphite as a key (and primary commodity) in the anode
- on average the battery producers are putting MORE natural graphite into the anode (NACHU graphite!!)
- market for graphite expected to go into shortfall by 2020 and China expected to be a importer (especially of quality graphite) from around that time
Unbelievably, with the economics all looking positive for graphite, MNS continues to burn money renting a place in NY to store 2nd hand equipment with while they look for the ~100m to get a factory up and running.
I don't know a lot about Syrah, but whatever peoples views, I can see that digging graphite out of the ground has enabled them to raise over 600m over the last 3 years. MNS mgmt should really think about 600m figure if they are thinking about having giga-battery-dreams.
