"Volkswagen unveiled its all-electric I.D. R Pikes Peak racer in April 2018, which was developed to challenge the 19.99km distance, the 1,440m climb and the 156 turns of the Pikes Peak Highway: Race to the Clouds. The VW I.D. R was designed within the framework of lightweight and high-performance and set a Pikes Peak record time in June of 7 minutes and 57.148 seconds, besting both previous electric and internal combustion engine records.

The I.D. R. uses a twin electric motor for a total 500kW and 650Nm allowing for an acceleration of 0-100km/h in 2.25 seconds. The motor technology used is a surface permanent magnet, radial flux motor, which allows for a peak efficiency of over 98% (the conversion of electrical battery energy to mechanical energy)."
