Unfortunately with renewables you just can't turn the wick up, the sun can't shine more brightly, the wind can't blow harder by intervention from mankind if demand increases, so its more about using the excess power generated by these adhoc power sources or its lost & wasted.
Storage is the keys as renewable never produce what you want when you need it.
There is no doubt the electric to battery has the least amount of losses, but losses non the less (don't forget transmission loss.)
Eg. Pumped hydro - the dam becomes your battery, molten salt -, retains heat to boil water for future use. Splitting water to create hydrogen gas (but this gas is put into a safer state in ammonia to be transported as what happen now with fuel) to various depots & released at a later stage when required or burnt in power stations (your power station would probably produce H onsite as next to a water source so no transport requried).
These H plants can be built & replicated quite easily (Unlike Giga factories for 6/2/2 talk of 8/1/1 factories will dominate, however need an inert atmosphere in the factory & overcome thermal runaway issues to make these higher density batteries mainstream- probably won't be here till end of the 2020's.)
Battery technology is not where we want it to be right now.
We need a 1,000 k range & a 5 minute recharge for battery tech, but not there yet (I believe will get there).
Some interesting developments in carbon nanotube & graphene being used in battery development. Results are promising, but decades away from commercial applications.
Different battery types will become dominant depending on their purpose/ need.
Lithium/ Cobalt is but one of hundreds of combos's but right now (& for the next decade - my guess) will be king of the portable batteries.
There are so many other techs needing research & development.
Right now it how to store this "FREE" energy & a bigger Lithium Battery like SA is not the solution.

Hydrogen has no future because it's very inefficient and efficiency is everything from now on.
Toyota is going to get badly burnt for backing the wrong horse that Elon Musk rightly pointed out was a loser and why.
Molten salt flashes water into steam to drive the same turbines as coal except it's far more flexible with that massive, clean, cheap, reuseable, heat source at call 24/7.
