I think the reality is that he did some research off his own back because he was so excited about the possibilities. Our management being what they are said 'thanks', but even reading his research was too much hard work for them to even know if the research was good or bad.
As for confidential information - i think the only type of conf. info is how much of a backhander management are paying themselves and their mates. And they wouldn't give that info away to anyone.
All in my jaded opinion.
