Interesting question, and there's probably no single right answer. My guess is there would be a few ways to improve a trending system during periods of consolidation/ranging.

You've got some good suggestions there, but you haven't mentioned a trailing stop, whether it's a simple trail, or a trail behind x number of bars, or even say an ATR based trail.
