For Australia, the future will see the mix of renewables to include wind, solar, ethanol from sugar cane, fuel oil from seeds, geothermal, tidal, hydro, and there are probably more erngy sources. At the moment almost all renewable energy sources are at the start of their developmental run. Super capacitors will assist rechargable batteries. The supercapacitors are also in their early stages, but they charge and discharge at very rapid rates, so will be included in grid storage to meet the peak spikes in demand (and grid suppy at nights). No one says there will be a single solution with renewables, but it will have to happen. Every country will probably develop their own solutions, because most are recognising that the continuing use coal is no longer viable due to its environmental impact on climate and biodiversity (as identified by countless scientific studies). We should also include the detrimental effect of burning coal on human health - cancer, allergies, asthma and breathing illnesses. Lithium and the other battery-metals will be the new mining boom of the 2020s and beyond.
