I believe only 1 drill hole was initially needed because of cost and the early exploration stage.
Cost is definitely a big factor. Diamond core holes can easily cost upwards of a million dollars if we go deep (as CM did). Then we have hydrology and hydrometallurgy costs on top of that.
Further, hitting a target mineral i.e. lithium in one location of a brine aquifer 'typically' means that the whole aquafer will contain the target mineral i.e. lithium. Hence, if we wanted to find out if a basin or particular aquifer contained lithium, one drill hole and pump test analysis will be enough in most cases.
If the chemistry works out, more holes can be drilled later for JORC/resource definition purposes, and extraction/injection wells.
