"I take it that when you have finished buying you want it to go higher, surely?"
On the contrary, as an investor who tries to buy cash flow streams cheaply as possible, the only time I will ever be "finished" buying is when I one day totally cease investing (which, I suspect, will be when I take my last breath).
My approach to investing is that I am constantly trying to buy cash flow streams as cheaply as possible, then deploy the cash flows I've acquired into other cheap cash flow streams, and then investing those added cash flows into yet more cheap cash flow streams, and so on, thereby increasing the cash flows I receive at ever-increasing rates (i.e. creating value by that most beautiful wealth-creating phenomenon of the compounding effect)
Ergo, APA's share price going up makes the cash flow stream represented by APA become more expensive.
Which works against my investment objectives.
