"The absolute cheapest method right now IMO to export from Manono would be truck 50km west to congo rivir, barge 150km downstream to the railway link for export. I'd rather AVZ stick to something that can be implemented now, on the cheap and improve it over time."

Doc this may be right - but I think we need a worked example to make it real. I find myself wondering about depth of rivers (not breadth) don't want heavy barges carrying trains full of ore getting stuck on low bottoms. And with respect to road or rail to what extent these resources have to be shared to other purposes and or financed from the value created by the project.

Kcheers talking about the southward road and you considering I think it was 36000 tons of concentrate allowed for some numbers to be sketched out numbers of trucks, kilometers between trucks- how often trucks would pass on bridges etc.

At the moment we don't have even rough sketches of how many barges, how many rail cars etc would be enough to get a start. We don't have info on how much capacity is available on existing rail lines. Without partial duplications of track the trains can't go both ways etc.

And with shared use of resources - a broken down boat or truck owned by a congolese local unrelated to anything mining may block a route.

I think time, dollars, volumes, (numbers of barges and railcars) need to be plotted out better- otherwise talk of barges and trains (without numbers of either) just sounds too hand wavy.

I think AVZ could benefit from better discussion about who actually pays for barges and railcars. And if railtrack needs to be duplicated for extra capacity who pays for that. The road rehabilitation isn't strictly for AVZ. And likely wont be sufficient - though it will help with servicing and transportation of construction materials in.
