Yep the WA micro grid power scene (over 300 regional communities need a micro grid) is being resolved completely via solar + battery storage. Proof of concept established, pilot project completed and proven to work, now being rolled out state wide.
Lithium batteries are not a new or unproven tech. Solar power mobs now offer a domestic package including panels, battery + install with enough capacity to go off the grid for $15K. This is mass market now.
Mining sector following suit, no need for any R & D as the concept is already on display via the micro grid and domestic models. Just scale it up or down to the capacity you need.
