• Anglo American Plc’s giant Brazilian iron ore mine will be suspended for approx. three months following a slurry-pipeline leak that hit last week. In a company announcement, it’s expected to take about 90 days for the full inspection to be completed, during which time operations at Minas-Rio will remain suspended as “specialized technical equipment will now be used to identify any other areas of potential weakness within the pipeline”.
• The suspension of operations across the site is expected to impact the delivery of high-grade iron ore to the global seaborne market, damaging supplies of the premium product which is in high demand as mills across China continue to comply with directives to curb pollution while maximizing productivity. The delay will have an impact on 2018 production targets of 13-15 million tonnes, revised down from 16.8 million tonnes in 2017.
