Catapult is not ahead of the game? Who has the most teams signed up from elite business? They ARE ahead of the game as of today. Whether they will be leading in the future, it's a guess for anyone at this stage.
There is no prospect of supernormal profits to be made, only a slow building of network across the world and gathering more and more teams to sign up to use your platform. Catapult has spent last 13 years doing this to reach where they are right now. And meanwhile, they are still small compared to the market potential out there (yet biggest when compared to all other people competing in this space).

Yes, you're right in saying that the first mover is not necessarily the winner. The company that executes the best and sells the best over the long term is the one that ultimately succeeds. The quality of the product is only an enabler and is no guarantee for success. Statsports claims that they are the "World's Leading provider of player tracking devices in the elite space". This is a misleading statement. I have zero clue about whether their product is as well designed as Catapult's, but surely Catapult has collected more data from more teams and players for a longer period of time. And considering that Catapult is 6 times the size of Statsports organisationally, I know who has more firepower in terms of deriving insights from the data that they have and incorporate them into the new design, and also who has a better chances of winning in the end.
