The bonanza grades reported from those old workings indicate that there wasn't a lot of lower grade ore being extracted even though it quite obviously was there. Old timers, using mainly hand tools in harsh conditions, were not going to be bothered with ore of 2 grams per tonne. That was just waste to them. It also very likely that they missed patches of the high grade ore as well and never dug deep enough to fully exploit the potential. They worked on experience and intuition, and they were probably good at finding the easy shallow gold, but not interested in anything else. The ore they dismissed as too lean or too deep to be mined is what Calidus will use to build its resources. As I see it, Calidus has only one drill hole deeper than 100 m and the main ore body is still open at 150 m. Comparing CAI with WAF (as some have done) is instructive. WAF has excellent grades but they mainly start around 400 meters depth.
