Australian Retail Sales Fall in December​

SYDNEY--Australian retail sales weakened in December following a sharp jump in November on the back of booming iPhone X sales and Black Friday discounts.
Sales fell 0.5% in the month, compared with an expected 0.2% fall, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said Tuesday. Sales in the fourth quarter rose by 0.9%.
A steep fall in household goods weighed on the December result. Household goods sales declined by 2.6% in December, swinging from a 4.7% rise in November.
The data comes just ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia's first policy meeting for this year, with interest rates expected to remain on hold at 1.5%.
The RBA said in December that there were "significant" risks around the outlook for consumer spending citing record household debt levels and a 20-year-low in wages growth.
With personal savings falling sharply, there is a risk that a slowdown in retail spending, a large part of the economy, could see the activity lose momentum.
Still, a jobs boom is underway in Australia, with 400,000 new jobs created in 2017, taking some of the sting out of soft wages growth.
