SFMTA installs Translink smart card system

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 12, 2007 - The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will begin installing card readers today in order to prepare for the new TransLink smart card transit fair payment system.
The system will be installed on all fleet vehicles for the test phase.

The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District and the Golden Gate Transit and Ferry use the system.

"After a much awaited arrival, it's exciting to see SFMTA proceeding with the necessary preparations to test the system here," said SFMTA Executive Director and CEO Nathaniel Ford, Sr. "The test phase is crucial to validating that the smart card system runs smoothly on MUNI vehicles before it goes live."

Those using TransLink cards on AC Transit, Golden Gate Transit and MUNI light rail vehicles may be able to use them on MUNI vehicles, but not all vehicles will be equipped or some readers may not be functioning.

"The TransLink smart card us more than just smart - it's the future of seamless travel in the Bay Area," said San Francisco May Gavin Newsom in a written statement. "(We're) taking the necessary next step toward extending the convenience of smart card technology to transit customers in the city and throughout the region."
