Probably no more than we hear of another shitty human doing the same to a kid??
I trust dogs more than I do humans.... humans do horrible things to other humans for pleasure, and worse - to defenseless kids. Yet we let these scumbags live and we kill the dogs. At least with dogs we know it is very rarely out of pleasure - more of fear/self defense/bad owners.
Dogs are always a subject of their owner and how they have been treated. Just because a dog owner is good person, doesn't mean they know how to bring up a dog, much the same with children really. A dog doesn't need to be physically/verbally abused to be abused - owning a dog and keeping it locked in a yard all it's life constitutes abuse and creates poor social etiquette imo. Drives me wild when people do that.
The unfortunate thing with some breeds is that when these mishaps happen, size and strength usually determines the outcome and severity - Chiwawa sized bites are probably more common, just without the same impact. But I'm sure the intent is the same?
I have a 55kg dog, he has the strength of a horse (feels like that anyway), I am 6ft 2" and I would never be able to stop him if something went pear shaped. But we recognise that and have taught him to be a sook, especially with kids. Although, he doesn't like drunk bogans down the beach in the morning
, he is quite protective of those he knows and he will let people that intimidate him know verbally. So far that has only been public drunks though.
