Years ahead for Renison
- SEAN FORD
The Renison mine looks set for a long-term future.
TIN TIME: Tin resources at the West Coast's Renison mine are up by 22 per cent, an annual update shows, while there are enough reserves for eight years of mining.
The West Coast operation’s measured, indicated and inferred resource was up by 22 per cent to 213,000 tonnes of contained tin, according to an annual resource and reserve update issued on Monday by half-owner Metals X Limited.
The mine had an eight-year reserve after new reserve replaced mined tin, with more reserve expected.
“Although mining has taken place at Renison for over 100 years, each year we continue to advance our geological understanding of this massive tin system, which has once again resulted in another substantial increase in resources,” Metals X managing director Warren Hallam said.
“This increase is yet to be fully reflected in the conversion to reserves at this time.
“However, we have maintained an eight-year ore reserve and, based upon the resource inventory and exploration upside, are confident that Renison will remain a long-life, profitable operation.
Mr Hallam said an ore sorter being constructed would increase the grade of ore to the mill by 15-20 per cent.
“As such, we propose to bulk mine areas that have shown to be economically amenable to ore sorting.”
“The move to bulk mining of selected areas will increase productivity, continue to lower unit costs across the operation and will further extend the mine life by making previously uneconomic areas profitable.”
The updated figures were as at March 31.
Tin prices have been strong in recent times and Tasmania is in the midst of a “tin rush” as companies work to get projects to mining stage or expand existing operations.
Stellar Resources Limited aims to mine its Heemskirk deposit near Zeehan, while Elementos Limited has big plans for the former Cleveland mining operation near North-West ghost town Luina.
The Bluestone Mines Tasmania Joint Venture which owns Renison, also has a potential growth project in mind.
The Rentails tailings retreatment program would provide an estimated 330 direct and indirect jobs if it went ahead, and up to 550 for construction.
Metals X recently said the project’s economics were compelling.
