One big change will be the introduction of the TiVo digital video recorder (DVR) by the Seven Network next year. This will greatly facilitate "time-shifted" viewing, assuming the networks co-operate in providing programming information.

TiVo will be competing against an improved IQ box from Foxtel. Both boxes will offer similar features and will compete directly against each, especially if Foxtel is successful in its attempts to provide all free-to-air content over its network.

They will also compete against media centre PCs and Apple TV and devices such as Reeltime's Home Entertainment Centre, which will combine DVR and web surfing capabilities. Interactivity between all device types will continue, including the phenomenon of "side shifting" - recording on one device and watching on another.
