The latest data from Shortman supports this theory.
On 16 Oct the share price increased from $3.80 to $3.94. However, on the ASX 3,087,664 of short transactions. This was 0.53% of capital and above the average.
On the 16 Oct the total short positions reported to ASIC declined from 18.66% to 18.26%. This is a reduction in short contracts of around 2.3m contracts. Thus, there were 3m new short trades on the ASX and probably around 5.3m (2.3 + 3) trades to close out short positions (maybe on CHI-X).
Not sure what this means. There are still 107m open short positions when daily turnover is around 2m to 5m and the share price is rising.
