    Canarail assessed the feasibility of constructing a new open access multi-use rail link to transport the ore mined in the Fermont and Fire Lake areas to the Pointe-Noire facility in Sept-ÃŽles at the best cost possible.

    The study concluded that an additional rail link would become viable if the need for ore transportation increased by 40 million metric tonnes per year (Mtpa). However, the transport capacity of existing rail links in the territory is able to meet the short-term demand of mining companies.

    A sustainable relationship:

    The results of the Canarail study will be relevant for many years, as the preferred solution for ground transportation of large quantities of ore will always remain the railway. The mining potential of the Labrador Trough is significant and the proposed route to transport the ore to Sept-ÃŽles will remain viable in the long term.

    The Quebec government has joined forces with the mining companies, the Iron Mines Champion Limited and the Lac Otelnuk Mining Operations Ltd. to form the Northern Quebec Railway Corporation, which oversaw the completion of this study. The Plan Nord Corporation assumed the final cost of the study, which amounts to $ 15.2 million, less than the budget of $ 20 million for this purpose. The mining partners, for their part, contributed to the study by providing previously produced data and reports.

    Facilitating access to the territory is one of the conditions for success identified in the Plan Nord by 2035, action plan 2015-2020. A study on a third rail link to improve access to the Labrador Trough is planned to ensure that adequate service will be available for any new development and thus facilitate the implementation of projects on the territory of the Plan Nord.
