Truth be told, I find it very difficult to distinguish between the two, as investment alternatives.
My sense is that SDF's growth strategy is more aggressive than AUB's, and it has the added international element to that growth (for better or worse), so its organic growth rate each year will probably be a few pips higher than AUB's.
Then again, SDF trades at 1-2 valuation multiple points above that of AUB, so all in all, the difference between the two companies has always been a bit of a wash for me.
I guess I have always been an AUB shareholder (since March 2008) and I've never felt the need to change horses.
Like AUB, my sense is that SDF is a high-quality business, managed by prudent executives who understand risk management and shareholder value creation.
And I suspect both businesses will continue to create wealth for their shareholders for years to come.
