Use of high watermarks is a different aspect of performance fees. It just means that post a negative period, they have to make back losses before they can begin to charge performance fees again. This is a positive feature because otherwise in a big fall, they can be charging performance fees from the bottom of the trough yet the investor can still be underwater.
