I'm not sure it would be day traders. I'm certain they'd only touch a stock if it had the right liquidity. More likely it is the odd investor getting out because:
1) they need he money
2) hey don't see the stock moving higher for X amount of time.

Given the length of time that the SP has underperformed, several investors would be willing to sell at a loss to invest their money elsewhere. It's quite hard to do because we all have a bias to hold our shares even when things aren't looking Rosey. But the odd invested will do it in order to make their money work.
