Definitely nothing wrong with this. He sold some of his own shares to provide the cash to exercise his options. (note he hasn't bought options as some have put it, that would provide cash to the secondary market. Exercising provides cash to the company).
The options in question had an expiry of 31/5/17 so why wouldn't he? In the perfect world for us shareholders he would use the lazy $600k laying around instead of selling stock but maybe his own personal situation isn't that flush.
I have no issue with directors doing this. Had he just dropped $600k of stock on market without using the funds to benefit the company (and himself obviously) then I would be peeved.
