IMO this was always going to be an underground project. I was one of the first boots on ground at SFR's Degrussa copper mine. Similar situation with huge grades. Direction from the board was to start the open cut after firing the underground portal to get cashflow happening from the near surface DSO while the decline was developed. What we ended up with was a very similar looking set up from the air to the neighboring Plutonic mine whose airstrip we were using.
There is also a lot of underground experience in RSA so the change in direction for the DFS has little impact. If anything I'd suggest ultimately a more economical proposal. These grades are huge and will not stay in the ground.
