Respectfully I disagree here. Open Source has been the centre of a lot of the major innovation is the world today. One can look at Linux as an example, an open source system, but support is offered by a number of variants, (even IBM) and most of the cloud servers in the world run on Linux. However the point is relevant but not a conclusive argument.

Also Open Source comes with a range of caveats, really expressed in their license agreement.

Potree is an example of one person writing some code (equivalent to the early Pointerra), and its is as good as Pointerra in its fundamental technology, but far more advanced in its presentation. Well Pointerra does not have a footprint yet. Potree has been adopted by a Dutch company who is moving it forward technically and in the marketing domain. Pointerra beware. Another example is OpenVDB, probably the worlds best within a range of domains, as well as Pointerra's domain. Check out http://www.openvdb.org/  You will see the aassociated companies that have taken this open source and codeveloped for their own specific interests. One group, Houdini from Canada, I think, has taken the code and developed extensions for points (bingo), and they use it in animation effects to which they are probably the worlds best, winning numerous Academy Awards. They have back ported to OpenVDB and it is free software for the world to use, except presumably some specialist code they developed.

Further OpenVDB has developed a strong association with nVidia (who I am sure your guys will be aware of), in developing the best modelling and cloud solution out there.

Pointerra is breaking new ground into an area that is well and truly trodden with a product that is clearly not in the leaders group.
