...but Pointerra may have struck onto something here, with there ESRI association.

There is a looming battle between ESRI and Bentley over some technologies and formats. I don't know where Autodesk fits into it at present.

However ESRI ae talking about streaming technologies are formats, of which point technology is only part of the solution. I am presuming that Pointerra is involved in that. Bentley Systems are introducing its own structures. It is all about streaming level of detail (LOD) for points and surfaces. Esri are talking about streaming true 3D surfaces (by I am presuming fractured triangles). I am not such if Pointerra have this technology, they haven't mentioned it, but it was discussed when I was there, pre Pointerra days.

This technology possibility is exciting potentially for Pointerra, but it is not the DAAS environment that they have been chasing since ASX inception, but rather the productizing of their technology within large GIS software developers, ESRI being one of them.

Esri(and the others) has been burnt by the fact they Google Earth has essentially taken away their simplistic GIDS functionality. Now that Google Earth Enterprise has really pulled out of the market, ESRI and Bentley System are trying to capture that environment. Also there are others, lots of others, strong players, pushing into that area.

Pointerra is best served, in the short term at least with there lack of significant technical experise, getting into that environment as a technology not as a service.
