Personally I'm not a big fan that my dentist gets a breville coffee machine etc for buying in volume. Is this a common industry practice?

Yes, that is indeed a bit bizarre.
Like you, I far prefer it if the products sold themselves based on merit, without the need for "fee-set-of-steak-knives" style hook.

I like being alerted to the warts of the companies in which I invest.
As an aside, I did notice that the company's premier nova star product is excluded from the special offer.
(PS. As another aside, I'm not sure how a Breville coffee machine comes to be classified as a business tool but, speaking as a Breville shareholder for a second, it does go part of the way to assuaging my circumspect feelings about SDI's somewhat rudimentary approach to marketing its products.)
