Just look at the images between Optiscan,s bundled fibre stuff and it's new Optiscan Point Scanning, the picture is much clearer!

    Miniaturised Confocal Microscopy

There are two technologies used in Miniaturised Confocal Microscopy, these being:
    • Bundled Fibre Confocal
    • Point Scanning Confocal (Optiscan)
Optiscan has developed products using both of these technologies and did hold the patents for both, and are therefore well placed to provide an objective view of the difference between the two technologies.
Although Bundled Fibre allows for the possibility of a smaller probe it does significantly limit the possible image quality. Optiscan subsequently dropped the patent for Bundle Fibre technology many years ago in favour of Point Scanning Confocal which captures full and complete high-resolution images, with a full field of view.
Point Scanning Confocal allows for the use of a single probe to capture all of the images required even at different tissue depths.
Bundled Fibre Confocal requires the use of multiple probes, each probe capable of a defined field of view and optical depth. When investigating the use of Bundled Fibre technology please ensure that you ask which probe captured which image.
Image use Probe 1 to locate the area of interest, only having to remove Probe 1, install Probe 2 in the system and place Probe 2 back in exactly the same location to be able to view deeper into the tissue. Then imagine replacing Probe 2 with Probe 3 to enable a magnified view that provides some degree of detail. That is what you can expect from Bundled Fibre Confocal.
Now reimagine the scenario using an Optiscan Point Scanning Confocal probe where you use the single probe to identify the are area or event of interest and simply change the optical depth and/or magnification on-demand all while capturing images.

Please note these images are of
    Rat Colonic Mucosa and
were captured sequentially from the same region the Colon using Optiscan Bundled Fibre and Optiscan Point Scanning Confocal Technology. As it is almost impossible to position a subsequent probe in an identical position [in vivo] the areas of focus may not be identical objects.
Optiscan’s patented Point Scanning Confocal Technology provides far superior image quality than the alternative ‘Bundled Fibre’ technology.

Bundled Fibre technology captures an image that resembles looking through the door of a microwave oven, i.e. it is missing information, this is one of the reasons Optiscan dropped the patents it held on Bundled Fibre technology many years ago knowing it would not deliver the quality Clinical and Preclinical Research professionals demand.
You can’t create what does not exist.

Information missing in a raw captured image cannot be created with image processing.
On the other hand, Optiscan's point Scanning Confocal Technology delivers complete high-resolution images giving you a complete picture.
