I am not at all surprised that the market has reacted positively to the statement released by Tassal regarding the interview Mark Ryan has had with ABC.
The only new thing that I took away from the statement is that CSIRO has confirmed that the coming summer will bring more rain and wind thus it is unlikely that sea surface temperatures will be as high as they were last summer. Note that rain and wind causes significant recharge of dissolved oxygen levels in the water. Also note that it has been raining consistently every week in Tassie over the past 6 months and combining with nice cold ocean currents, I believe that Tassal's live biomass has grown substantially over this period.
What cracked me up in particular was Four Corner's question regarding the use of Astaxanthin in fish feed. It seems like they had no idea what it was. Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring anti-oxidant found in crustaceans like crab, lobsters, prawns/shrimps, salmon and any other marine life form that has a red hue. This is how salmon naturally get its colour from, by ingesting smaller marine life forms that had been feeding on microalgae that produces this anti-oxidant.
Astaxanthin is even taken as a supplement (which you can get from vitamin stores) supporting immune function, cardiovascular health, brain health and protecting cells from oxidation damage. Middle class Chinese tourists are buying this supplement in bulk in Australia to take home.
I do not see this Four Corner's interview as a threat to Tassal at all but I rather welcome it as it casts a spotlight for the community to see how highly regulated, compliant and open to public scrutiny the company already is.
Have a nice week ahead!
