Mining magnate Andrew Forrest has declared that the nation is close to the end of a five-year slump in commodity prices that has skewered successive government efforts to repair the federal budget.
The figures suggest that while Australia continues to trade in a global commodity market confounded by excess supply, aggressive cost-cutting by local producers and the lower dollar mean exporters have weathered the storm better than their offshore competitors. Supplies from the US and Canada, where there have been mine closures, have contracted sharply.
Renewed optimism about commodity prices comes as Moody's Investors Service said Australia was demonstrating a strong "resilience".
The agency forecast it would be the fastest growing AAA-rated commodity exporter this year in real, inflation-adjusted terms.
