You say batteries but they have not yet been tested on a grid scale that I am aware of. Ditto solar thermal - just google - cost of solar thermal electricity  - none of the refs are new - all tired old predictions. So I checked what the wiki says -
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentrated_solar_power
not a lot of joy there for large scale thermal solar.
I agree with you re nuc but that is a dead notion politically in Australia.
Right now Sth Aust AEMO shows power is costing 350-$400 per MWhr to keep the grid stable.

The 30 min chart linked below shows that in this evenings rush period they can not get bids under $1000 for what looks to be at least an hour - up to $13,000. At those prices you would think teams of old folks on bicycle generators  might make wages.

As of 9am SA has increased the diesel run to keep the grid stable.
Here is what needs to be revealed.
How much has Australia spent on renewable subsidies over 15 years?
What was the total cost of those installations?
What claims were made about production and costs before construction?
What power are they generating now?
If the light of knowledge could shine on those above four issues - we could better assess current Green demands for colossal taxpayer funding of the thrust to do away with fossil fuels.
