Gabriel is a very good operator, a very smart guy, and a very nice chap. And he's ethical - see eg his maintenance of a dividend stream rather than hoarding cash to retain FUM.
The difficulty he faces is that he doesn't have scale. That part of $40m that he can responsibly put into one basket is rarely enough for a stake to give him the leverage an activist needs. And that effectively turns him into a value investor. Which he's very good at - but which isn't the story he sold to IPO investors.
