There is another thing here which is a worrying feature of modern banking which probably would not have happened 30 years ago .

In the past , banks stuck to banking and didn't engage in large scale proprietary trading on their own account .

They would also not use their monopolistic positions and to compete in other industries .

I'm not saying that it was ever quite as black and white as that but banks have an unfair advantage and if they can't restrain their urge to use it , then legislation is needed to prevent them doing so .

For those of us on main street , things used to work a whole lot better when banks were banks and not hedge funds with banking licenses and ultimately underwritten by the taxpayer .
