For those that are mathematically inclined, the popular belief that i is the square root of -1 is wrong. The actual definition is i squared = -1, not i = sqrt(-1).

The proof is simple:

1 = sqrt (1) = sqrt(-1 x -1) = sqrt(-1) x sqrt(-1) = i x i = -1

that is, 1 = -1, which is obvious rubbish.

The "error" is that a square root of anything can be +/- (eg square root of 4 is plus or minus 2), so the last term in the above proof should actually read +/-i x +/-i = -1

Nerdy, I know, but it has direct consequences. If a band called Square Root of Negative One plays, you're never sure if you will actually hear anything or not, dependent on whether they adopt the imaginary number -i or +i as their answer!
