MRL Corporation doubles graphite holdings, fast-tracking production

MRL Corporation (ASX:MRF) has once again pounced on high-grade graphite acreage in Sri Lanka, with the company agreeing to acquire an extensive parcel of tenements hosting graphite mineralisation and historic workings.The new tenements add to MRL’s growing portfolio of high-grade graphite assets in the country.MRL Corporation is also on the fast-track to graphite production, which could be as soon as 2015.Sri Lanka is the only region in the world which produces commercial quantities of vein graphite with greater than 90% total graphitic carbon (TGC).

New tenements

The deal will double the company's exposure in the country by adding another 5,600 hectares.The acquisition agreement is subject to the completion of due diligence by MRL, including inspection of the historic workings and the areas of known graphite mineralisation.

Consideration will be three million MRL shares escrowed for 24 months.MRL will issue a further 3.6 million shares upon either the first conversion of one of the new exploration licences to a mining licence or the second anniversary of the issue of the first shares, whichever comes first. In other company news, metallurgical tests are currently underway on bulk samples from MRL Corporation’s Aluketiya and Warakapola Pandeniya high-grade graphite projects as part of the company’s plan to fast-track production and cash flow.

Aluketiya produced high-grade graphite for several decades until the operation was stopped in the 1960s while Pandeniya contains numerous historical adits, shafts and remnant graphite dumps.

MRL Corporation is also refurbishing selected shafts at Pandeniya for underground exploration and at the Aluketiya Mining License to commence mining.Application is also being made to convert the Pandeniya area to an Industrial Mining Licence.

MRL believes it will be in a position to start ramping up commercial production later next year.


Analysis

MRL Corporation continues to increase its tenement footprint in Sri Lanka, which hosts the highest grade of natural graphite in the world.

The company is aiming to develop an underground mining operation to extract high-grade, crystalline vein graphite.

Vein (crystalline) graphite is the purest form of graphite with TGC grades typically >90%, with some grade as high as 99.5% TGC.

With a focus on just mining the high grade vein, this drastically lowers capex and opex, and has the potential for MRL Corporation to sell run of mine.Production could start in 2015.
