I agree it is difficult. So one must have a strategy and be prepared to be stopped out at some point. If a commodity is in a downtrend then it generally makes no sense to keep holding the producers (see what happened to the coal companies in Oz and USA) and you can make some money on the bounces with the funds from the shares you have sold. Then if there is a good share badly beaten down you can scoop it up and make a heap. There have been some very nice bounces over the last 3 years in the goldies (I have also had a hard time catching many of them due to a lack of skill/experience).
Sounds easy enough but not that easy to execute. Must not fall in love with anything in the portfolio.
