NBN's hot rod hopes for old pipes

The politics of the national broadband network could become a little easier for the Coalition government if the latest NBN Co claims about technology turbo-charging the old cable networks prove correct.

"NBN Co is set to become one of the first telecommunications companies in the world to introduce the high-speed cable technology, known as Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.1," according to NBN Co's chief technology officer Dennis Steiger.

Its claim is that the technology runs as fast as fibre to the home - which was what the NBN was originally intended to be, again under the more expensive (but state of the art) Labor plan.

"Effectively, this technology has the potential to offer speeds equivalent to what's on offer by full fibre to the premises and up to 100 times faster than what is currently provided by today's HFC network," Steiger says.
