Yep, dodgy indeed... I could give a few reasons why but that would change nothing. Pertfectly Legal.
eg. gift your relative $100k. Casually over dinner give a subtle hint to buy. All legal... Of course a Board member should be talking up their own company as long as they do not meantion secifics during that dinner conversation.
If the reletive had some wealth then the gift would not be needed. They could gift you ten years latter for the tip.
